Inner Resources

There are many times in our lives when we are presented with extremely difficult circumstances that we are somehow forced to face and to deal with. Most times we don’t feel that we actually have the strength or depth of energy that we need in order to navigate the obstacles that have been put on our path. The fact is that part of the dynamic of human life is and always will include the challenges that come from the changes that occur in our lives.

“When we are no longer able to change
a situation – we are challenged to change ourselves.”

Victor Frankel

Although life changes are often chaotic, disruptive, and even destructive, they are serving a specific purpose. They are designed to actually show us hidden strengths that we are completely unaware of that we actually possess. These strengths can only be activated by a deep necessity on our part; by a genuine existential emergency, which presents us with a choice. This moment of choice is extremely poignant and irreplaceable. At that crucial moment, when we are on the threshold of choosing to expand past our limitations or to remain small, the entire universe is witnessing us with bated breath. It has no idea what is about to happen. Existence itself is waiting to be surprised by the mysterious and creative power of free will that we possess. And when we choose, in that amazing, sparkling moment to expand our depth and understanding, to step outside of the old way of seeing things, we change the entire quality of the universe we live in. We may not know where we’re going, what we’re doing, or who we’re becoming, but we can sense that we have just taken a step on a path filled with new beginnings, possibilities, and potential.

Midlife will certainly provide many challenging opportunities for us to grow and change, and sometimes it won’t look pretty to begin with. But remember that in order for a seed to grow, the soil it gets planted in must first be disturbed and overturned in order to make a place for the seed’s potentiality. Life changes disturb the very ground of our limited existence in order to make a place for the greater flowering of our experience, allowing our roots to grow deeper into the earth while our branches and leaves reach further towards the heavens. When we can embrace the challenges that we are given with an open heart and a willingness to change, our inner strength and creativity increase dramatically, and we are blessed with a vision of our current and future selves that could not have otherwise become visible to us.
